Q: Any help with buying a used car?
Im thinking of either getting a 2004 impala or 2004 grand am. When purchasing do you get to choose the number of months you want to lease for example, 60, 72, or 84 months? I am in Illinois so if you have any info in regards to the interest rates or any other terms it will be appreciated

A: yes you get to choose the terms but it all depends on your monthly payment and down payment. If you give a high down payment with high monthly payments then the term will be less. However if you give a low down payment or low monthly payments then the term will be longer. Now for the interest rates, it all depends on your credit. What you can do is find a low interest rate that a bank or credit union could offer you, then go to the dealer and tell them the interest rate and what they would do is either meet or beat that rate. Remember you Choose your monthly pymt, down pymts and term. Again interest rates depend more on your credit. So if you dont like the deal then you could keep objecting until you agree o.k.

I know all this because i was a sales associate for a dealer and have much experience. So if you have any more questions please feel free to email me. Hope this helps

Q: Buying a used car from another state and worried about the lemon story.?
So, I am about to buy a used 2002 Mercedes from a dealer in Illinois. I live in Virginia. The car has about 60k miles on it.
I am worried that once I buy, it may not last long and break with in a month or so.
If this happens and is a serious breakdown e.g. engine or electronics etc, what can i do?

Isn’t there a some kind of an automatic warranty. Apparently the lemon law does not apply for used cars.
Sometimes dealers offer extended warranty but the car is quite old and I don’t think I can get extended warranty. What should I do?

A: No, there’s no automatic warranty when you buy a used car, unless the manufacturer’s warranty hasn’t expired. If you buy a used car, you assume all the risk. Make sure you check it over thoroughly before you commit to buying it.

You are correct, lemon laws provide protection for buyers of new cars.

Q: Lemon Law/Manufacturer Buyback, I bought a used car, then found THAT on the title AFTER!!!!!!!?
Lemon Law Buyback??? I bought a used car….. found THAT on the title AFTERwards….?
I bought a used car (2006 Pontiac GTO) about two months ago and JUST recently found out that the title has a lemon law/manufacturer buyback on it. It was a defect in the paint supposedly. It claims that the defect was remedied, then sold at auction…….

then over the course of the past year it has been retitled, but the lemon law thing still pops up……..

SHOULD the dealer have told me about this in WRITING when I purchased the car, or have they gone against the law???? (I’m from Illinois)…… I’ve been reading here and there that if a car was previously bought back because of a defect/lemon law that it should be presented to you in writing at the time of sale if the car gets resold later. The dealership never told me ANYTHING!

Am I able to do something about this, like take the dealership to court or have them buy it back or something???
I have checked ALL my paperwork, read EVERYTHING (literally) and there is NO where in MY paperwork that says anything about it previously having the lemon title…….

A: By law, they have to disclose this to you at time of sale.

Q: If a used car purchased “as is” needs $2500 worth of repairs 4 days later, do we have any recourse?
My nephew purchase a used car from Hyundai. The salesperson told him the car was in “mint” condition. Four days later, the car broke-down and ultimately, the cost of repairs were $2500. When we called the dealer/salesperson to explain what happened, he could not have cared less. In Illinois the Lemon Law does not apply to used cars. I know “as is” means “as is” but, this really is fraud. The car mechanic stated the problem with the car was very obvious and not a hidden problem and the dealer obviously knew the car was not in “mint condition”. Its really a shame that the dealer did not make a “good faith” attempt to repair the vehicle. Do we have any recourse at all?

A: Sorry, but you have no real cause of action. Unless there was a warranty in writing, you get to repair the car.

The statement of “mint condition” is a what the law calls a nebulous statement. It is not specific and is open to interpretation. If he had said “The car has a brand new engine” and it didnt, that’s one thing. But general statements don’t carry any weight. “Mint” to you and “mint” to him are obviously two different things.

This is the part where I say “If the problem was obvious, then it would have been spotted by YOUR mechanic in a pre-purchase inspection”. I don’t care where you are buying the car – private party, dealer, used pope-mobile – ALWAYS have an inspection done.

Sorry you are in this situation, but there really isnt a lot that can be done.

Q: Buying used car from another state?
i live in Illinois and want to buy a friend’s friend’s used nissan altima for cash $ from Tennessee. i intend to drive it myself from TN to IL, then sell my existing corolla and transfer the corolla plates to altima eventually. the question is – how do i go about the transaction? how do i drive it legally from TN to IL? is there some kind of a temp permit that is valid only for a month or so? which state do i pay the tax to?

any guidance in the paperwork would be greatly appreciated…

A: First check to see what documents are required by the IL DMV office to transfer a title on an out of state vehicle. Probably need odometer disclosure (included on the title of newer cars in most states), the title, and a bill of sale.

You and the seller should go to the DMV office in TN, transfer the title, and the DMV office should issue you a temp tag so you can return to IL.

You will pay IL state sales/use tax when you register/title the car in IL.

Q: what site can i look under to find a good and reliable used compact car for my daughter?

I need it to in Illinois western suburbs perfer a private owner with a clean title.also car must be automatic.

A: With only 1500 try ebay, autotrader, carsoup, Yahoo Autos, craigslist.

I would go with that first one.

Q: My son bought a used car,he got screwed basically, how can he get his $ back? (private owned)?
It was privately owned,in Illinois,pd $450,88 Honda Accord, was told it runs,(HA!),needs lots of nickel and dime work, not even painted, just primed, from what I am hearing, the seller was only 14 yrs old.I’m not sure what other details to put in here,I’m just looking for a starting point, lemon laws dont apply to used cars,I checked
its a 1988,and he paid $450.00-the kid had the gall to come ask for another $50 tonight-I’m not sure about the kid’s age,he was a friend of my son’s friend, believe me I wasnt happy when he up and bought it unchecked, but he’s 18 and kinda stubborn
I know he’s probably out his $,and yes, coulda been worse,I just feel kinda bad for him,he paid for it himself, worked a lot of hours for basically nothing. It just bites as a parent to see your kid get ripped and not really be able to do anything. All I do know is the kid told him it would run,and it ran long enough to get home, and thats pretty well it. I dont even know how long of a trip that was
Well I figured its really a loss on his part, but I felt I had to ask around so hopefully he will learn from this. And like I said,I know it coulda been worse money wise, but $450 did hurt him quite a bit

A: Is it legal for a 14 year to sell a car? That might be a technicality you can check out.

Q: Buy a used car, odometer rollback found?
I bought a car last Friday from a pastor at Chicago, Illinois. In the car, the odometer says it is 141K miles. At the title transfer, 141K was written into the title by the pastor. However, I found that car was 159K in 2009. So there must be a rollback for the car. He never told me about this.

How should I do? Is there any law protecting me from the cheating?

Thanks.
The odo 159K was obtained from Carfax.com
The car is 97 BMW 528i. The odometer is not mechanical but electronic and LCD display.
The 147K was at 2007. It was 3 years ago. In 2009, it is 159K

A: Odometer discrepancie are the number one area where Carfax has errors.

they rely on data submitted from maintenance shops, smog shops, DMV records, body shops and other sources. All it takes is for Jiffy Lube to accidentally key in the wrong mileage, and Carfax screams ‘rollback’.

Fact of the matter is, when a car has that many mi les, there is not much to gain from changing the odometer. Add to that, its expensive. You need to usually replace the dash cluster and the car’s ECU to complete a rollback – a cost of abotu $1000 or so. If it was a 2 yr old Benz, then I could see someone thinking its worth the time and expense. But on a car that is well over 100K miles, its not likely.

I find it more believable that Carfax is in error.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

ADD: The OP sent me a copy of the Autocheck report….

OK – well this may be one of the cases where there is a legitimate odometer discrepancy.

However there are still several problems with getting any resolution. The first, and most glaring, is that you did not pull this report BEFORE you bought the car. ONce you buy it, you own it as is, where is. You had access to the resource ahead of time and did not take advantage of it.

Second, this is a private party transaction. All private party sales are, also, as is and final when money changes hands. Everything that is wrong about the car was wrong when you bought it, or happened afterward. You accepted the car in its condition

Third, the age. On a car this old, they are exempt form odometer disclosure. So all you would get resolved is a recoding of the car’s mileage as being Total Miles Unkown (TMU).

Lastly, you would have to prove that the seller knew about the fraud, and intentionally commiitted the fraud. Its very possible that, like you, he did not pull a report before he bought it, and has never bothered to find out since.

I am sorry to say that, even if this is an odometer fraud case, you are probably still out of gas. You can talk to the DMV in your state and find out the specific rules there, but I don’t hold out a lot of hope.

Q: USED CAR!!tax title license and sticker help!!!!?
i just bought a used 1998 chevy cavalier 4 door ls sedan with 121k miles. i paid $300 cash. i i live in ILLINOIS. this is also my first car and im only 17 if that factors in at all. approximately how much would all of the paperwork and license and sticker and all that cost me?

A: Tax is around 7% of the car’s value (varies by county). Title and registration fees are $194 (95 for title, 99 for registration/plates), with a yearly $99 renewal fee. And don’t forget insurance will cost you also.

Q: I was wanting to buy a new or used car and…?
my credit is horrible i even had a car repo this past december however i absolutly need a car for transportation im in the state of illinois and was wondering if anyone would have any idea of what my chances were for actually securing a car loan of sorts…

A: Save $1000 and buy a $1000 car. If you can’t save $1000 then you can’t make car payments either. Don’t go to a buy here pay here. Live within your means or you will regret it.

Do me a favor: since you probably won’t listen to me (no offense, most people chose debt over logic), print this page out and read it to yourself as the engine immobilizer kicks on and you sit on the side of the highway waiting for the repo man to give you a ride home. Then, when you can’t possibly find a bank to finance you, you can go back to my original advice.
Peace&love, brutha

Q: Extra Fee’s when purchesing used car?
I’m buying a used car from my uncle. He’s selling me his 1999 Ford Taurus for $800. So far I think i’v got to pay for license plates, title fee, and registration? Is this correct? I’d go to the DMV to pay all this correct? Do I still have to register the vehicle since my uncle just sold it to me? I live in area code 62094 illinois montgomery county. Any further information is greatly appriciated.

A: You will need insurance policy BEFORE you do any DMV work.

DMV will consist of….

Tax on purchase price
Title fee
Registration (plates)
Lien fee (if you owe your uncle money on it)

Tax should be 6.25% rate would be ($800x .06250)

Good Luck

Q: How much is it to get a title and license plate from the Currency Exchange or somewhere?
I’m going to get a used car in a few weeks from a dealership or Craigslist.

And I live in Illinois.

Thanks!

A: You get the title from the seller. Once you have the title, you get insurance from an agent, then take the title, insurance, money for taxes and fees and car to a license branch and get the registration and license plate(s). The exact fees and taxes depend on your state; check its DMV web site, which may tell you; otherwise, you’ll have to call the DMV.

Q: buying a used car?
i have insurance but i currently live in Illinois, i am going to be living with my aunt in north Carolina for three months and i am wondering if i purchase a used car in north Carolina what do i have to do to be able to drive it? i have my license of course but what else do i need to do before i can legally drive it in north Carolina?
were do i go for the license plate, and other stuff like that? the north Carolina dmv?

A: you,d have to insure it and in some cases they might want you to change your drivers license to north Carolina ones also, usually they will give you a few months in a state before you have to swap out on the license, but you should be able to buy and drive the car their legally if you insure it,and license it their.good luck.
