Q: does anyone know……….?
if you want to purchase a car (no financing) from a dealership in Illinois, do you have to have insurance for the car before the sale?
A: i guess yeah
Q: Help! I purchased a vehicle thurs. and was charged double for the asking price.?
I purchased a car thursday and found out friday that the car was for sale 100% cheaper than what I paid. Is there a law in illinois that says u can return a vehicle w/in a certain amount of days? If so how long? What should I do about being ripped off? I haven’t paid the full balance of the vehicle yet.
If you advertise a price an someone comes in isn’t it the responsibility of the salesmen to give u all the facts?
A: take it back to them and tell them you want the sales price and if they refuse then tell them the deals off and if they give a big hassle about that then tell them your going to the better business bureau.
Q: Do you have to pay sales tax when registering an out-of-state vehicle in California?
I just moved back to California and have my (previously California state) massachusetts state Honda and a New York state-registered GMC Jimmy that was a gift from my mother in law that need to be registered in California. I went on the website and did a “fee finder” worksheet and the fees came out to between $150-200 for each, which was what I was expecting. Here’s the issue: my cousin from Illinois SWEARS that when her brother moved to California in 1985 he had to pay $800 to bring a car in to the state because the state of CA made him pay sales tax on the worth of the car. I could maybe understand this if he was coming from a state that doesn’t have sales tax, but his car was bought in Illinois where they do have it. If I have to do this it will work out to probably over $1000 for us and I just don’t have it. This doesn’t seem to make sense to me, since sales tax was paid on both cars already, just not in CA for the New York car but she was SO adamant about this that I”m scared to go to the DMV.
Anyone who has recently moved to CA and registered an out of state vehicle PLEASE HELP!
A: I live in CA and often buy out of state vehicles and then register them here. They will tax you on what the vehicle is worth in addition to the registration fee, also you need to have current insurance on the vehicle(s).
Q: Jailed and innocent of identity theft-who do I sue, and can I for defamation.I live in the state of Illinois?
I bought a 2004 intrepid at Gateway chevy, and my credit wasnt that great, and I refused to have a cosigner so the sales man said that was ok but did I know anyone that could sign a waiver that would up my fica score from 500 to 700 points in order to get the 5.9% financing. I said yeah my mom would. well when the salesman met with my mom in the hospital, drugged up also from medication, and she is also 83 years old, he got her to cosign for the loan. I didnt know this until 2 months later when i was arrested at my moms house for criminal tresspass when I was living there for 2 months. the alsip police towed my new car back to the dealers and I was placed in jail for 5 months, due to criminal tresspass, and they were also looking to file an idenity charge on me but it never happened. my neice who also lived in my moms house, was the one who filed the charge of criminal tresspass. I lost my Job, my car, all my furniture that I had in storage from the sale of my home. how long do I have.

Q: I have a Bill of Sale but the other guy has the title and now he wants more money?
I traded a car for a boat with a guy and at the time he told me he had no title and to just file for a lost one. Well now 6 months later he calls wanting $500 for the title and if we don’t give it to him he is going to say it’s stolen. He has my car the title to the car and the title to the boat and now he wants $500. The boat broke down during our first ride, and cost us several hundred dollars to repair. What are my options? The bill of sale said sold for a $1. What do I do? I really don’t want to have to get a lawyer. Also I don’t know if it matters or not, but I live in Illinois. Thank you for all of your help
A: You really have nothing legally.
You probably wouldnt have a case in court either.
But, with a bill of sale, I doubt he will report it stolen because your bill of sale is proof its not. (Assuming its real and signed by him)
Further he would get arrested for filing a false police report.
I have no idea how you can legally get the title from him. You set yourself up for this, now you have no leverage.

Q: I live in Illinois, but would love to move to the los angeles area…?
I want to move to the part of california that is warm almost all year round, as I have heard that los angeles is just the place to be. I have a illinois drivers license and motor vehicle in that respect what would I need to do to get a california drivers license & car plates. I am also wondering about the job situation. I have experience as a cashier, a sales associate, and some experience with clerical work. Is it hard to get positions for those jobs? I saw that on monster.com, there as some positions open for cashiers in Los Angeles & I found a few apartments im interested in. Anyone have any advice?
A: My advice is Not to move to CA now. The job market is horrible and umemployment it at 15 %. You should wait until the economy picks up.
Q: Live in IL want to buy a car in MO?
OK..here’s the deal.
I live in Illinois, right across the river from St. Louis. there are a lot of cars I’ve been seeing for sale in Missouri, and I’m thinking about getting one from there.
The thing I can’t figure out is what kind of taxes I’m going to have to pay. Will I have to pay way more just because I bought it in MO instead of IL? would it even be worth it? Should I stick to my side of the river? Or is it really not going to cost that much extra? Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.
A: You pay the taxes in the state you register the car in, not where you bought it. Get a moving permit to drive it to IL. Don’t forget insurance coverage.
Q: How do I payoff my Infiniti lease?
I am looking to buy a new vehicle. My current buyout price on my 2005 Infinti FX35 is $26k. Can I sell this car on my own for $26k (plus Illinois State sales tax) to someone else and essentially be done with my lease? How is this different than me buying the vehicle at the end of the lease term? Are there any unique terms and conditions that go along with buying it out early?
Maybe I figured it out….. I can pay the buyout price right now for my vehichle and it is mine free and clear…. OR, I can pay the early termination charges and just turn the car in. Does this sound right? If I buy the car (really, it would be the dealership where I am buying the new car from since I am rolling the negative balance into my new car), do I have to pay sales tax AGAIN????
A: I assume you got your current buyout price from the lease company recently, and it’s not the lease-end buyout price in your lease contract.
The way that lease companies calculate buyout prices is different (“actuarial method”) than the way your payments were calculated at the beginning of your lease. Their method credits more your payments to finance charges and less to the actual payoff of the lease balance. In other words, the buyout price is usually much more than the car is worth, and more than anyone might want to pay for it — unless you had made a large down payment at the start of your lease.
Depending on how close you are to the end of your lease, the lease-end buyout price might be a better deal. But you’ll only know by looking at the numbers in detail.
Some lease companies allow “third party buyouts” which allows your buyer to buy directly from the lease company without you having to buy first. This avoids you having to pay sales tax, and then the buyer having to pay sales tax again.
Q: how does car tax work?
I bought a car off ebay from another state, so do I pay the sales tax when I apply for a title in my state? Also how do I Find out this information the car is from Florida I live in Illinois
A: You will pay taxes on the car when you register it in Illinois. It’s the same as if you were to buy the car from your neighbor. You might have to have the VIN inspected by a police officer depending on where in Illinois you live.
Q: What car would you suggest?
I am beginning a new job as a territory sales rep (Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana) and I am trying to decided on a what used car I should buy.
I need to focus in space, ease of use, RELIABILITY and it needs to be dependable in SNOW! I would prefer not get an SUV but rather a sedan. The car also needs to be around the 15-17k range for a used one. Any thoughts or opinions?
A: Make sure you don’t get a RWD (Rear-wheel drive) car because it can get crazy on snow. The Subaru the other person recommended should be a good bet if you are paranoid about control. The Accord, Camry, Civic should be just fine too if you don’t drive too fast as they are FWD cars.
Q: On the state level why not change the tax rate for different items?
I think every item sold should be taxed in order to make up for budget deficit. But in states such as NY and Illinois the taxes are exceptionally high. I think prescription drugs should be taxed and at lower rates ( 1 – 3 %). I think extremely high ticket items such as cars should be subject to lower sales tax rates such as 4 – 5 % so more consumers buy, especially energy efficient models. I think clothing should be taxed at the regular rate, it’s not currently, not sure why. Clothing is a necessity but you don’t have to buy a new pair of pants every month. I also think energy efficient items should be taxed at lower rates or provided tax breaks/incentives.
A: It’s pretty much as you describe it…
Then again what needs to be done is ensure that the revenue brought in by taxes is spent correctly rather than wasted.
Q: Car question?
There is a Dodge Ram rumblebee truck for sale in our town…its used but not sure how many miles it has…my question is would this be a good car for a first driver in illinois…keeping in mind insurance, safety(like airbags and such) and it should be easy to park since there are harfly any blind spots on a truck. Even though it puts out alot of horsepower…it is a heavy truck…fuel efficiency doesnt matter to me since i have been saving up all my life just for gas…i could use your insight on this matter…thank you
A: Hi
well you can also get really good cheap cars from auctions , you will find thousands of different auction and repo cars of all kinds of models really cheap at http://www.carauctiondeals.com

Q: Selling my car, need advice on transfer paperwork?
This is the first time I am selling a car, so I need some advice.
I am in the process of selling my car to a private party. I have the title, and it is fully paid up. I am in Bolingbrook, Illinois. When I get a buyer for my car, I would like to know:
1. Which is the safest form of payment that I should accept? Should I wait till I get paid before I move ahead with the paperwork?
2. How do I transfer the title to the new owner? Do I just sign the title certificate along with the buyer and hand it over to him?
3. Do I just take the license plates off and keep/destroy them? Then how does the buyer drive it off my premises without plates? Or should he first take the transferred title to the DMV, get new plates and the bring the plates while taking possession of the vehicle?
4. What othet paperwork should we sign – Bill of Sale? Odometer statement? Do we need to get these papers registered with DMV?
5. Should I inform DMV about the sale? Is there any form for this?
A: 1. Please if you dont follow any advice I give at lease listen to this one thing. Take ONLY cash. Not money order or cashiers check or even certified bank check. There are all kinds of scams right now and everything looks real legit but about a month will go by – you think everything went smooth but then the bank and government is looking for you.
TRUST ME. (if they are legit they will understand.) Do not give ANY paperwork to the buyer until you have recieved the payment.
All you need to do is print up a bill of sale (make 2 copies and be sure the buyer signs both, keep 1 for your records). The bill of sale must contain the date, purchase price, mileage, vin# etc.. (be sure to sell in AS IS AS SEEN CONDITION – NO WARRANTY IMPLIED OR EXPRESSED-a very important sentence!))
It must be signed by both parties. You will need to sign over the title to the new buyer (on the back). Some states require that you give a copy of your current registration to the buyer (makes life easier for the DMV employee). There is nothing else you need to sign
Once this is complete you need to turn the plates back into the DMV so you don’t have to keep paying the taxes on the vehicle.
It is the buyers responsibility to get the car home after buying it from you. Many states will allow you to put the plates from your old car on the new car for 14 days before needing to register it. Either way, it is not your responsibility
