Q: I’m taking Amtrack from Chicago to New Orleans soon. Anyone ridden in their sleeper cars lately?
A: Lots of people ride in their sleeper cars – otherwise they’d stop running them!
I did a couple of years ago. The track on the first night was really rough – enough to wake you up. It wasn’t so bad the next morning.
Food on that train is great, especially as they now have 24 hour dining, and chef usually adds his own “pizzazz”.
Watch out on the left as you approach NO. You’ll go around the longest continuous railway curve in the world, around Lake Ponchartrain. Watch out for the wildlife and the fisherman shacks!
Q: Are cars cheaper in Los Angeles or Chicago?
trying to figure if I should bring my car there or buy a new car when I get there.
A: California has a high Sales tax, but Chicago does too. does not matter
Q: I want to move to Chicago, but I hate taking public transportation. Am I making a mistake?
I love Chicago, and want to move there, but I can’t stand taking public transportation anywhere. I like to get in my car and go where I need to go. Driving also relaxes me. The idea of standing outside, waiting for a bus or train, etc. urks me. Also, I just leased a new car. I do love Chicago though, so am I making a mistake by moving there if I refuse to take public transportation? Thanks.
A: You’ll be fine as long as you make a lot of money. Because it’s going to cost to park downtown. Also, it takes a lot of time to drive there because it’s people first and cars a far second. With hundreds of people trying to cross the street, and one car trying to turn, who do you think gets to go? The people. Try to pull something and agressivly push them out of the way and you will wind up with a dented fender (from someone slugging your car) or a ticket.
The city was designed around the transportation. To be Mr. Suburbanite and ignore that fact is your choice. Maybe you should move to a nearby suburb and only visit the city occasionally?
Q: Should I move to Chicago, Atlanta or New York?
I’m a 28-year old health administration professional that is looking to relocate. I have my B.S. in Health and I will have my MHA by year’s end. I’ve lived in Houston all my life and I want something new. I’ve traveled quite a bit around the country and I’ve narrowed my choices down to Chicago, Atlanta, and New York. I like to shop, go out, socialize & travel. I’m single so I’d like something with an active dating scene. I want to live somewhere more “metropolitan” than Houston (preferably in a high-rise) but also affordable. I expect to be earning 50-60/K which should increase once I complete my MHA so I need to be able to live & still have income left over for shopping & travel. I hate the hot, humid summers of Houston. I also wouldn’t mind having a roommate if it allows me to live in a nicer place.
I love everything about NYC except the cost of living. I’ll only live there if I can live in Manhattan. I haven’t been to Chicago yet, but if it is a “midwest Manhattan” I’ll probably like it but I’m little hesistant about the winters. I also really like the feel and population of Atlanta although it almost seems like a slightly better version of Houston. I have a new car but I would like the experience of walking and/or taking the subway. I have one friend in Atlanta. I don’t know anyone in Chicago or New York.
Given this information, which one should I choose?
A: Your MHA should open doors wherever you end up … so you’re off to a good start!
I used to live in Manhattan; there’s no place in the world like it — but rents are off the chart. You currently earn a respectable salary, but it won’t take you far in NYC. You’d probably end up moving to the Bronx, if you’re living within your means … and you don’t want to live there. Even if you earn 20k or 30k more, you’ll still be rent-poor living in Manhattan. And you’ll have to sell your new car…. !
Since you have a friend in Atlanta, why not come down for a week or so and visit her? Look at apartments, check out the nightlife, visit different neighborhoods. If you get a good feel, this is the place to go. If not — then move to Chicago!!!
You’re young. The decision you make now is not something you’re bound to for the rest of your life. I think your three options are great. You can’t miss. Nothing is irrevocable. Wherever you go you’ll make friends, experience new things and carve out a life for yourself.
Good luck!
Q: Cost for a drive to Chicago From New York?
I live on Long Island in Farmingdale, NY and my friend lives in Chicago and was planning on visiting her by car. How much would a drive there AND back cost? Including all the tolls and gas. an estimation would be very helpful. Thank you.
I drive a 2004 V4 Nissan Altima and the route is Farmingdale, NY to Chicago< Il the first one on google maps i guess lol
A: 2004 V4 Nissan Altima automatic transmission with 27 mpg, 830 miles
Tolls include the George Washington Bridge (free heading out, $8 returning, minus any discounts you get for an E-Z Pass — even less if you had a Green Pass for certain ultra-efficient cars, which this is not) and segments on Interestate 80 — known as the “New York to Chicago Corridor” — and Interstates 65 and 90. Part of that is the “Indiana East–West Toll Road”, a highway owned by the Indiana Finance Authority. If you have an E-Z Pass, which is compatible with the Indiana “i-Zoom”, you’ll get discounts at these tolls not to mention shorter lines and a faster trip. Every little bit counts. Cost in Indiana with that discount is around $5.50 as of this writing.
Here’s an article on the I-80 part of your journey:
www.mcrpc.com/countyplan/lrtp_corridor2.pdf
The trip takes you through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and finally Illinois. Total of 6 states.
You’ll use around 31 gallons each direction. At apx $3/gal, that will run you about $180 in gas, figure apx $20 in tolls, apx $200. Happy trails.
Q: When they review new cars, how can they tell how long they will last and how reliable they are?
I have a 1996 Toyota Camry, which I LOVE. I live in Chicago where we have some tough weather and that car is 100% dependable. I know people with cars only a couple years old who have more problems than I ever have. I’m not having mechanical issues, but other stuff is wearing out, like a door handle broke, the antenna won’t go down, etc. My husband finally convinced me to THINK about a new car. He wants to look at various car guides and Consumer Reports to see reviews of the latest models, but I’m wondering how these magazines can possibly rate the reliability of a car that has only been on the market for a year. I guess I am a die-hard Toyota fan (had others before) and I want a car that is going to last a loooong time. I don’t want to buy a car every couple of years. So my question is how can these car guides determine a car model’s reliability when it’s only a year old? Thanks!
A: Generally a good reviewer should be able to tell from the car’s obvious build quality (interior etc), it’s specification and similarities to older models wether it will last a reasonable amount of time or not. Unfortunately there’s no way they can tell if there will be major hiccups in the future (like some older cars’ gearbox only lasting ~50,000miles, when they came out there’s no way the tester could have predicted that!).
A major problem as mentioned by another answerer is the bias of some reviews. Best bet is to try and collect together multiple reviews of the car in question to try and gain a good idea of how it will perform, not all media is crooked!
Q: How much money spent on gas while traveling from New York to Chicago? (help me check my work?)?
What data would you need? Provide estimates of values and a sample calculation.
Distance: 790 mi.
Price of Gasoline (per gallon): 2.78
Miles per Gallon of car: 25
I did this: 790/25 = 31.6 x 2.78 = $87.8
Is this correct? Did I need anymore information? Is the number of significant figures correct?
Thanks if you can help me?
A: so 790miles / 25 mile/g = 31.6 gallons used yes, the units cancel, then
31.6 gallons * $2.78/gallon = $87.8
Not so sure about the sig figs. I can’t remember. I’m so sorry. Might wanna make it two sig figs because of the 25 miles. The other numbers have three sig figs, but I think you go with the lowest number of sig figs… so make it $88.
Q: Cars that need a new transmission?
I want to buy a cheap car that needs a new transmission, looking to fix it up and all that.
I live near Chicago.
Does anyone know a place i could go to buy a car that needs a new transmission?
A: Check craigslist, you can get re-furbished transmissions form salvage yards for next to nothing- the most you’ll have to pay is the person changing the transmissions out.
Q: What are the best must-go to museums in the USA? In New York, Washington DC, BOston and CHicago?
Also, we are going to cedar point (family of 5). We will be taking the train from chicago to sandusky, ohio probably. We will then be getting back to Cleveland to fly to Boston (We are from Australia…going to the US for 4 weeks in US summer in July). We were hoping to instead of hiring a car to get to cleveland, we were hoping to take the amtrak train back to cleveland the only problem is it only goes at 12:00midnight and arrives at 1:00am in Cleveland. I looked at crime statistics for cleveland and it seems pretty dangerous. Is it safe enough for us (3 kids and 2 parents) to take that train and then catch a taxi to our hotel or motel for the night before flying to BOston that day?
Should we hire a car and drive from Chicago to Sandusky so we can use the car to drive from Sandusky to Cleveland? With driving, travelling from Chicago, is Sandusky before Cleveland? On a map, would we pass through cleveland on our way to Sandusky, Ohio or not? How many miles with driving is it from Ch
Chicago to Sandusky, ohio and also Sandusky to Cleveland? Is it faster to drive to Sandusky from Chicago than take the amtrak train? Would we be better off (time wise) to fly to Cleveland with continental airlines and hire a car in Cleveland, drive to Sandusky, stay a few nights (3) and then drive back to Cleveland, hand back the hire car and fly from Cleveland? Please help! Also, how much does it usually cost to hire a car each day which fits 5 people?
A: Use mapquest.
Q: Chicago or New York to fall in Love?
Hello! I’ve decided to move to either of these cities to fall in love. It’s impossible to be spontaneously social in Los Angeles as I find myself stuck in my car to and from work! Which of these cities would you recommend? In my ideal neighbourhood I’ll love to have the outdoors/ a park, a bookstores, farmers market, cozy coffee shops, running and yoga, and a patio or a backyard in my apartment.
Thanks!
A: New York.
Q: Whats the best city to to live in and why?
I’m concerned with cost of living, entertainment, quality of living. I don’t necessarily need a car.
-Chicago, New York, Miami, La, Austin?
A: Well, I wouldnt choose any of those 5 as I have lived in all but Austin but if I had to choose it would be:
1. New York
2. Miami
3. Chicago
4. Austin
5. L.A. – although I would never move back to California…ever!
Q: How much would a road trip to New York cost from Chicago?
I’m not sure the make or model of the car but it’s a big van, I’m sure the mileage isn’t amazing.
Maximum of five people in 6 people in the car.
We would want to go for like, 3 or 4 days but I’m sure driving would add like, 3 days.
Average motel rate for two beds.
Also, what are some good tourist sites.
Give me all the info you have.
A: Go to “Mapquest.com” and get the mileage and divide that by 10 ( est. mpg) and multiply that by $4.00 ( average price per gallon) Next go to travelocity.com and check the hotel rates. After this you are your own. This is known as “Doing your own homework”
Q: Is it a good idea to move from Chicago to Las Vegas to start a new business in mortgage?
Now I am working in a Mortgage Company in Chicago with stable salary and I own a condo and a car. Our company is expanding to Las Vegas, I’d like to know if I shall move to Las Vegas to start a new branch office over there? I will be the office manager, but my income will be commission based with totally new market. I have no idea Las Vegas’s real estate industry and mortgage market, and what will be my new career future in Las Vegas? I m a single girl. Just seperated with BF. Shall I sell my condo in Chicago before I move to Las Vegas or keep it, in case later, i can come back Chicago if the market is not good in LV. How can I keep my condo here in Chicago, rent it out, who take care of the rent and maintainence? It is a big challenge choice for me. thanks and look forward to getting your instant response.
A: Either way you go. Move or stay. Make sure that you are putting money away for a rainy day. The mortgage industry goes through some slow downs just like the real estate market. Where ever you end up make sure you build a network of people that can provide you lenders. Stay in touch with realtors and builders.
From what I hear, there are a lot of new developments going in around the Los Vegas area. Sounds like a great opportunity.
